Doug Vine's future USA Shooting Ground
More information coming soon.

Hampshire regional report for the August issue by Andy Gordge.

Wow he’s done it again.
Just a short time ago in the May edition I had a full page interview on the Hampshire Skeet member Doug Summerbee printed, quite an incredible interview with this 82 year old Hampshire and international gold medal multi Champion, in the closing paragraph I reflected back over last year on how he won the Fareham CTC club Championship with a 98. The final closing words of the interview were "coming up soon is again the Fareham CTC club championship followed by the Hampshire Championship, could he !!!" …….well yes he obviously can history repeating its self another 98 retained Doug that title, the Club Championship trophy and the Richard Prince memorial shield.
The Hampshire Skeet Championship on the 25th July at his home ground Fareham CTC will see many watching with fingers crossed, once again………..could he!!! Let’s hope so.

ABT Championship.
The ABT Hampshire Championship was played out at Fareham CTC on the 13th June the 13th proved unlucky for some but not for Phil Eames it was to be his lucky day battling against quite a few entries he returned a 93 to take the Hampshire title and hopefully lead the team in the I/C on the 31st October at Southern Counties.

Not Born in the USA.
I bet if you had asked Doug Vine some years ago when he ran the small popular Lee-on-Solent shoot ground he would be constructing a mile square club in the USA you would probably have got a mouth full. Well check out the picture because its nearly finished, and its like Doug, big, well it would be its in the USA!!! Ron King recently back from the US Open Sporting Championship visited Doug at the new club and was very impressed certainly a place to put on the "do before you die list" a fantastic club house and layouts. And well done Ron King as he relieved the American competition of a large chunk of their prize fund.
More info shortly on the Hampshire web site relating to Doug’s US ground and don’t forget if you would like a short over sea’s cruise then check out the Isle of Wight Gun Club on www.islewightgunclub.co.uk

UT at Owl’s lodge.

A fine sunny Saturday the 1st of May attracted quite a few Hampshire trap members to Owl’s Lodge, Richard and Tanya set up a five stand pool shoot and a 50 target sporting lay out to play on once the UT had finished. If you have not shot the UT before like me it’s very much like ABT, very quick and the score board reflected the degree of difficulty with 22,s 23,s being posted. Most of us new to this discipline seemed to take to the UT quite well and yours truly actually returned the only 25 straight of the day this left me a seven targets clear of the field and on for a Hants title. Unfortunately the UT title slipped out of reach, basically my wheels fell resulting in four of us in a final shoot off for the title, Ron King stepped up a gear kept his composure and became the Hants UT Champ this year. Ron’s is such a nice chap he even apologised to me for nicking the title, Rom mate you deserved it I just shot like a plonker.

Date and venue change.

Unfortunately the UT Championship will be the last of the Hants Championships to be held at Owl’s Lodge due to various reasons we will have to relocate the Sport Trap Championship and the DT Championship. Southern Counties have given a date of the 1st of August for the Double Trap which we have excepted and it looks like Fareham CTC will hold the Sport Trap on the 3rd of October this will give us a couple of weeks prior to the Sport Trap Inter-counties which is at Southern Counties on the 17th of October.

Keep in touch by e-mail.

If you wish to be informed of any changes to shoot dates and venues etc or wish to receive latest items of interest by e-mail then please e-mail me on gordge205@btinternet.com and just state "I wish to be added to the Hampshire shoot news by E-mail" I will add your E-mail address to my Hants members file, only items of interest such as shoots coming up, best places for cartridges etc will be sent to you no jokes or spam related items will be sent. This will also help me get info to you if you have made an I/Counties team as quite often trying to get this team info to members by phone is very time consuming so please join in and e-mail me especially those that are trying to make a I/C team.

May the 9th Hampshire Sporting Championship at Wylye Valley.

Well done to Ian Stones and his team for putting on a splendid Sporting layout, yes testing some say, well it was a Championship after all, well attended by Hampshire members. John Heagren certainly found the layout to his liking returning with a High Gun score for Hampshire with 93/100 close on his tail was Des Sturgess with 91 which placed him 1st in "AA".
Collin Crockford returned a 87 which placed him 1st in "A" class, first place in "B" went to Tim Chandler on 85 and "C" class went to D Mapes with a 79.
Luke Elliott did well for the Juniors and posted 79, The Ladies class title went to Carol Sawkins with 75 and the Vet’s title was lifted by A Olden. Well done to all that made the trip to Wylye I’m sure with these scores most of you will be invited to make the trip to Podimore for the Inter-Counties team event on August the 1st so keep an eye on the web site for the team listings etc.

80 Open Sporting May 23rd.

Fareham CTC hosted an 80 target AJ (Smoker) Smith tribute shoot, Fareham was one of the favourite grounds that AJ regularly visited and the shoot was a tribute to a fantastic sporting member. The sun shone and the members fired away at some tricky targets spread over the ten stands several of the favourites chipped their way around, well after all this was a tribute shoot to one of Hampshire’s finest sportsman and it would take one of Hampshire finest sportsmen to take the High gun title on this layout. And that’s exactly who did take the title Hampshires finest Richard Faulds. Richard who was on for a 79 until the very last stand where a long dropping crosser set at quite a distance required Richard a couple of attempts before his pattern found the targets but hay 77 is excellent stuff and was five clear of the others for the High Gun title. 1st in "AA" went to another well known Richard, Richard King with 72, second in "AA" Nigel Frampton who also lifted the Fareham CTC Club Champion title with a 69, third place in "AA", Ben Gordge with 68 and Neil Lockton 4th with 67. "A" class went to Derek Campion, "B" class 1st went to M Pearce and "C" class went to S Rogers. Many thanks to the anonymous sponsor who put up £500 towards the very nice engraved Cup’s and the cash prises. Coupled with the club pay outs and the South Hants Garage services donation put some large smiles on the wining faces at a club where so many times we witnessed the big smiles and the banter of AJ when he regularly picked up his winnings.

An Interview with Hampshires Doug Summerbee by Andy Gordge.

Back in July 2009 I was drawn to the Fareham Clay Target Clubs well manicured Skeet layouts complete with their new roofing system over the entire pair of layouts, all the usual Skeet members turned up and quite a few new faces. This day was special for Doug Summerbee, July 19th still celebrating his 81st birthday, a lovely sunny day at his favourite club and to top it all the Club’s Skeet Championship title was up for grabs. This was enough to encourage even the club President Doug Summerbee to take to his walking sticks and enter.
These days it’s a challenge for Doug to get around the seven stands just as well there are seats every so often as the operations on his ankle is still painful at times.
Accompanied by his son who drove him their he made his way to "A" layout which made one or two new faces on his squad to frown and question if this chap will get to stand seven, you could tell on their face’s they thought the old boy was going to miss lots of targets and it could be "embarrassing" may be even "off putting" to the two new pumped up entries, a twenty five straight from Doug soon sorted their emotions out.
You see they didn’t realise they were in the presence of a man that has shot the Skeet circuits of the world with such precision……. I’ve seen the trophy room!!!
Badges, Shields, Cups and five international gold medals spanning decades, yes decades the list is extensive, Doug is a gentleman a true ambassador to the sport and the perfect Club President.
It took Doug a bit of convincing before he would allow me to write this story, Doug keeps his memories and his achievements locked away in his study for only his wife and family to see which these days has expanded some what and now consists of many Grandchildren, Great grandchildren.
Doug born July 1928 started shooting fifty one years ago while nursing a rugby injury, living near Fawley Doug and his wife June had just started up a coach business "Summerbee Coaches" and they soon realised Doug could not afford to be in a sport that would attract injuries.
His Dad encouraged him to change his sport and took him to a pheasant shoot, handing him an old side by side Doug was let him loose on the wild life, in Doug’s own words he did more damage to his face than any game.
Doug persevered with the gun and before long joined a clay shoot at Boldre which had a DTL and Skeet layout the more experienced shots convinced Doug that the gun just didn’t fit and with the business picking up he invested in a Browning A1 26.5 inch over and under, bingo next visit a 15 ex 20.
Doug heard of a new venue at Three Legged Cross and visited the club he soon struck up a friendship with the extremely experienced shot Chris Cradock who took Doug under his wing, they formed a friend ship that would last for the next thirty five years. Chris was very instrumental in the developing of Doug’s shooting ability and then the day came when Doug equalled Chris’s score’s this was a land mark an achievement in its self.
Doug set his sights higher and entered various competitions and travelled far and wide with the "Tony’s" IE: Tony Thompson (Hoppy) and Tony May an awesome trio even to this day conquering competition after competition.
Between competitions Doug returns to the game shoots with close friend, driver, loader, Bill Underwood having a much better success rate under Bill’s wing than the first experience at game shooting with his Father.
Doug wanted to raise his game even higher targeting a place in the England team missing out by one place on his first attempt making him reserve, not giving up found he qualified as a VET and went on to Captain the England VET’s team for five consecutive years, then of course we have the seventeen Hampshire, Surry and Sussex County Championship titles, five English open titles, two British open titles, and eight international titles three of which were high gun.
Doug who will be 82 in July is still enjoying his shooting even though he has had to re-think some of his strategies to get around the layouts. Shooting a Browning 20 bore 425 he is still a formidable competition entrant which brings me right back to the start of this article, even with an aching ankle a bit of Arthritis he finished off with a 98 taking that Fareham Club Championship title, unbelievable, one of Hampshires finest Sportsman, a legend.
June the 6th 2010 is the Fareham Club Championship then we have July 25th 2010 at Fareham CTC is the Hampshire Championship title………...could he!!! What a lovely thought.
On behalf of all your friends, the members of Fareham CTC the Hampshire CPSA we all wish you Doug Summerbee a heart felt congratulations in your 82nd year.

Hampshire 50 Single Barrel – Sunday 11th April 2010 report by David Bennett.

This well supported competition was held at Fareham Clay Target Club where 25 Competitors registered to take part. The weather conditions were really good however, sometimes tricky as most Competitors managed to lose the odd target to the backdrop of both layouts. At the end of the competition there was a tie as Ron King, Pete Thomson and Phil Eames returned a final score of 46/50. This led to a shoot off being held over 25 Targets, and at the end of the shoot off both Ron King and Phil Eames were still tied on 23/25. This led to a sudden death shoot off however, with Phil Eames unfortunately missing his second target out this allowed Ron King to successfully hit his target thereby winning the competition and becoming the Hampshire Single Barrel Champion for 2010.

Results

Champion after shoot off and sudden death – Ron King 46+23+2.

Twelve shooters attended the very first Hampshire County Championship Shoot at Owls Lodge Shooting Ground, the home of Olympic Gold Medallist Richard Faulds MBE and Tanya Faulds, on Saturday 4th April 2010.  This fine but blustery day, produced some interesting targets and a nail biting finish, refereed by Les Stevenson.

                                           Paul Oldring  23 24 23 19 = 89

After a sudden death shoot of on peg four, John Porter was crowned Hampshire Olympic Skeet Champion 2010, with a score of 90 + 4 The overall registered competition was won by Guy Franklin with a score of 95. Well done to all those who took part in this competition. This was the first registered shoot to be held at Owls Lodge Shooting Ground at Barton Stacey, since it opened in the latter part of 2009.  This well managed and easily accessible venue just of the A303, will be home to many more registered, non registered and County Championship shoots in the not too distant future. Let’s hope that more and more Hampshire and other shooters will come along to support this fine venue, for either practice or competition.  www.owlslodgeshootingschool.co.uk , many thanks to Richard and Tanya for their much welcomed hospitality.

 Saturday 6th March.

Andy Stratton team managers report.

The first Helice championship for Hampshire was held at the A1 Shooting Ground in conjunction with Berkshire who had chosen a very early date in the calendar which meant that not all of the Hampshire shooters could attend at such short notice. However on the day 9 Hampshire members turned up to shoot with the other 37 shooters from a variety of counties, including a 2 times world champion and many GBR shooters. On the day the Hampshire scores ex 15 targets varied from 13 down to 6 with Malcolm Grant becoming the first Hampshire champion with a score of 13 well done.

April 17th Olympic trap at Owl’s Lodge.

Les Stephens OT manager reports.

The second Hampshire championship shoot was held at Owl's Lodge Shooting School on the 17th April 2010, Seventeen competitors braved the Hampshire sunshine to shoot Olympic Trap. Conditions were near perfect and Chris Dean was the clear overall winner and the 2010 Hampshire Champion.

21st April Fareham CTC.

Ron Leamon who was the Chairman at Fareham for some seventeen years has sadly passed away; Ron who contributed so much to the club over the years retired five years ago from the Chairmans position but still enjoyed visiting the club with his wife Dot who also ran the kitchen at the club for many years.
As they both approach their eighties they wisely stepped down from the club duties and let some younger members take on the hard work that they had endured over the many years.
Ron’s funeral took place on the 20th April and was attended by many of the clubs members.

Owls lodge Junior Training Day – Saturday 27th March 2010

Report by David Bennett

This was the first time that the Hampshire CPSA had provided support to the Junior members of the County who had registered and shown an interest in shooting. The training day was held at the Owls Lodge Shooting Ground near Barton Stacey where each of the 5 Juniors who attended the day received coaching and tuition from Richard Faulds MBE. It was an overcast day with the odd rain shower however; everyone enjoyed the day and in between the showers managed to shoot a total of 100 targets spread across the disciplines of Skeet, UT and Sporting. To close the day a small 25 Target competition was held which saw Luke Elliott winning the competition with a returning score of 20/25 closely followed in 2nd place by Adam Ewens who returned a score of 19/25. For further information on Richard’s Shooting Ground then please go to OWLS LODGE SHOOTING SCHOOL

Left to Right are Adam Ewens, Luke Elliott, Daniel Godfray,

Fareham CTC AGM.

Just to let the huge amount of Hampshire members who are also Fareham CTC members know the out come of the recent AGM at the club, good news all members that run the club are staying on for another year, Tim Rowe will be in the Chairman’s position guiding the team through another year of championships.
To see the full AGM report and fixtures etc go to Fareham Clay Target Club

Who is the great Hampshire All Round star and Presidents Cup winner.

The 100 target All-round competition is a very popular discipline and it showed when seventeen squads entered the combined All-round of which the Presidents Cup title was also up for grabs by the Fareham members that had won their individual winter series discipline. These winning members shoot free of charge for the "Presidents Cup" and this year it was won/retained by seventeen year old Luke Elliott who shot an excellent 88/100 beating off some of the clubs best shots.
Hosted by Fareham CTC on 28th March the Hampshire Championship turned out to be a close fault competition but when the dust settled Trevor Bell posted a grand 92/100 to take the Hampshire All-round champion title and will Captain the I/C team on 26th September at Southern Counties.

The final results as listed below,

Hampshire Champion    Trevor Bell  92

Presidents Cup  Retained by Luke Elliott

AA  1st Ron A King  91   2nd  L. Elliott 88   3rd A Miles 83

 A   1st =  R Wyatt & C. Miles  88  3rd N Lockton 87  4th P Eames 84

Hampshire regional report by Andy Gordge

Hampshire Championships.

We have a new venue this year for several of the Hampshire Championships, Owls Lodge at Barton Stacey set 5 miles Winchester side of Andover on the A303. Richard and Tanya Faulds have been working hard to get this new venue on the map and I’m sure we will all help in supporting this New Hampshire ground. The Championships at Owls Lodge will be held on Saturdays which we hope will work in well with members plans, the Championships awarded to Owls Lodge are as follows,

Sat 3rd April Universal Trap

Sat 17th April Olympic Trap.

Sat 1st May Olympic Skeet.

Sat 5th June Double Rise.

Sat 19th June Double Trap.

Owls Lodge will also be hosting 50 target re-entry Open Sporting events on Saturdays the 3rd and 17th April, May 1st, June 5th, June 19th, Aug 21st and Sept 25th.

To help our juniors, Richard and the Hampshire CPSA management team have got together and will be rewarding the eight or so juniors with a day out at Owls lodge where they will receive tuition from Richard and his team, 125 targets over several disciplines which we believe will be a great boost for their shooting ability. This was only possible with the huge support from Bell Mirosystems of Portsmouth, many thanks again to Alister Bell who’s not bad at target shooting either, Alister his son and several of his team had a great day at Owls Lodge towards the end of last year.

To have a good look at Owls Lodge check out their web site at OWLS LODGE SHOOTING SCHOOL

Or phone them on 07734-200280 open Wed and Fridays for practice/tuition in several disciplines.

I have been a few times now and say it’s a bit like Southern Counties with a big grassed earth bank as a back drop for the trap disciplines, Skeet layouts and Sport Trap layouts. The club house is big, modern and can accommodate a lot of visitors etc. Prices are really good for practice sections and no prob with Plas-wad’s either.

The following Hampshire Championship shoots are at Fareham CTC Titchfield Lane on the following Sundays.

28th March 100 All Round.

30th May 100 DTL

13th June 100 ABT.

25th July 100 English Skeet.

5th Sept 10 pair Springing Teal.

The Sporting this year will be at Wylye Valley on the 9th of May and the Fitasc on 3rd of October.

If there is any disciplines not shown and to make sure the dates have not changed please either go to the Hampshire web site www.hampshirecpsa.org.uk e-mail me on gordge205@btinternet.com or phone me on 07860-700459 as the dates posted were correct at the time I sent in this report on the 28th February but shoots dates do sometimes change.

This year to qualify for the I/C teams the following minimum cut off percentages will be applied on the disciplines, DTL 88.7, S/B 84.8, DR 74.2, Skeet 89.4, Sporting 67.8, Sport trap 72.7, ABT 86.4, All-round 76, Fitasc 75.5. All other disciplines can be found on the CPSA web site under classifications, B class averages which are the ones being used as the qualifying are cut off averages.

So in essence if you can score more than 67.8 ex 100 in Sporting you’re in with a chance of making a team a slim chance but a chance.

Hampshire regional report by Andy Gordge

Oh my, what a bad start to 2010 terrible news that Bruce Faulds was diagnosed with a terrible illness just before Christmas and then so shortly after Bruce passed away. Bruce Faulds had played an enormous part in the support and encouragement of not only Richards’s achievements but the achievements of many juniors in the passed. Bruce had been very instrumental in the setting up of the new training ground with Richard, Owls Lodge shooting School at Barton Stacey the sole purpose of which is to train juniors and seniors to shoot better in lots of disciplines a legacy that Bruce has left us, he might not be here in body but his memories will always be with us.
Our heart felt sympathy from every body goes out to Richard, Tanya, Charlie and family.

Just as we were coming to terms with Bruce Faulds passing away the shocking news that rocked every clay target shooting member in the country that A J (smoker) Smith had tragically passed away. I used to watch in amazement at AJ’s shooting skills, as a lad of 18 I used to score for a group of extremely talented shooters, there would be A J, Jonathon Smith, Dexter Hooker, John Oldfield, Malcolm Lambert to name a few, travelling to three or four club’s every weekend taking all the top prises. On many occasions I was lucky to be given tips and lessons by A J and over the years like many others in Hampshire watch his talent grow with shear admiration. Winning a mountain of top competitions here and abroad when A J turned up at a shoot you knew who the High Gun would go to, for quite some time he’s been living in the USA and shooting the American circuit with Doug Vine who I know is devastated by the loss of such a friend and great shooting talent.
It’s a damned shame that he didn’t let his mates around him share his troubles as I’m sure he would still be with us today.

Hampshire AGM.

The annual Hants AGM was held recently at Fareham CTC club house but it would appear that 1,318 members forgot it was on, yeah right. We fed a small village with the food that was left over such a shame that only a small group turned up and there wasn’t any snow to blame either. Well the good news is that Dave Bennett has retained the Chairman’s position Atul Vijay is the Vice Chair and Brian Coupe is Treasurer and I Andy Gordge the secretary, "don’t ask I was their, it just happened" most of the team managers are the same. The really good news is that Alister Bell of Bell Microsystems has decided to support the Hampshire shoot teams again this year. So if you didn’t get one of those extremely sort after shooting vests on your back then start training now to get a place in a Hampshire team. At the meeting the Hampshire management team where asked to introduce a new Hampshire Championship title that is the discipline of "Helice" it was agreed that if there are enough Hampshire entries this would be recognised as a championship. The selection method of teams will be revised at our first meeting; the members qualifying for such teams will find it quite hard this year, the qualifying method and out come of the meeting will be posted on the Hants web site www.hampshirecpsa.org.uk so keep checking and pass any info to those old dinosaurs that aren’t able to access the web. Please note the Hampshire report on the web site is an un-cut submission due to unlimited space so do have a good read if able.
I will also do my best to put any news and decisions in this section of the magazine, please let me know of any news etc that might be of interest, preferably good news as I have had enough bad news for this year. So send any info to me at, gordge205@btinternet.com or phone 07860-700459
